Firts Blog

Hello everyone!

This is the last post and today I’m going to talk about my blog experience. I’ve never had a blog in my life, so this was a new experience for me. Sometimes I saw blogs from other people, but when I considered create my own blog I thought that my post will be very boring to the people that read it.
I enjoyed the experience because talking about different topics and gave my opinion about that was very entertaining.
My favorite post was this one about a TV show I watched as a child, because this made me remember my childhood and made me think about the old TV shows (I think those are the bests). Also I had fun with this post because I started to search my favorite shows intros. My least favorite post was this one about a concert or exhibition, I mean I like concerts and exhibitions but it was hard to me to find something to post, because I´ve never been in a concert and the exhibitions that I visited were not boring but a little monotonous.
I don’t know who has the most attractive blog; I think every blog has their own style but I like the Catalina’s background.
I think the blog was a good language learning tool because in my opinion one of the most important things learning something is practice and in addition I prefer write than speak, because when I´m speaking I feel so much nervous and insecurity.

Sabrina the Teenage Witch

Hello everyone!

Today I’m going to talk about a TV Show I saw when I was young; this show was called “Sabrina, the Teenage Witch”. The TV show was about a teenage witch called Sabrina Spellman, she lives with her aunts Hilda und Zelda, and her cat Salem. When she becomes 16 years old, her aunts reveal to her the secret that she is a witch. So she has to learn to be a witch living the problems that teenagers have, in the mortal world. Also at home she has a closet that takes her to another dimension: “the Other Realm”, where witches and wizards live. The TV show ran from 1996 until 2000.
I remember that the series transmitted before I have lunch. So always before lunch I was in front of the TV and then when the show finished my mother served the food. Then when I went to school some days I could see the entire chapter, because in my school at lunchtime all students went home.
I enjoyed so much to see Sabrina the Teenage Witch, because although Sabrina was a witch, she had normal teenage problems, except of course when she had to travel in time or travel to the moon. Sabrina’s aunts were also very funny; they made me laugh every time.  But my favorite character was Salem, the talking cat. He was ambitious and egocentric, but he always helped Sabrina when she needed him…also he was very cute!

Languages

It was hard to remember some video that I saw, because I rarely see videos on youtube, unless they are music videos.
I really like languages, so one day I spent an entire afternoon watching videos of people doing different accents of English or the world, one of these videos that caught my attention was one of the Ellen show, where they made a competition to guess different accents, it was fun.

Also another video that I liked was one which focused more on English and the differences between British and United States accent, and words that are only used in those countries.

Do schools kill creativity?

Hello everyone!

Today I’m going to talk about a video: “Do school kill creativity?” by Ken Robinson. A few years ago I saw a video from him talking about the education, called “Changing paradigms” and I like it as this video about creativity. I liked the video about paradigms because was an illustrated animation relating Robinson’s speech. In spite of that, I enjoyed the video of creativity, I think is a very interesting topic and is not tedious to hear because I find Robinson’s speech fairly light with his sense of humor.
I agree with Robinson, I think that school, being so strict and structured, are killing creativity over time because they do not allow children to use their full potential. Children have a great capacity of innovation. How the people want innovation if schools try to “build” them all the same?
I remember that when I was young I was in my art class in 5th grade and my teacher made my classmates and I do an exercise that was done before to the children in 1st grade. That consisted of close our eyes and starts to draw senseless lines on a blank sheet of paper, without lifting the pencil. Then, when we opened our eyes, we had to find as many figures that were formed with the lines. The great majority of my classmates saw only geometric shapes, although there were others who also found other much more complicated figures. When we finished the exercise the teacher compared the results and said that the 1st grade children had done better than us. That made me realize that we are losing skills we are born with and the great majority does not care enough to do something about it.

Buildings

Hello everyone!

It was hard to decide a building that I like, because when I tried to think nothing came to my mind, but then I remembered a building that really catches my attention. The "Burj Al Arab” is a 321 meters hotel which is located in Dubai.
The first time I heard about this building was because I saw a picture of a tennis court on the highest floor of the hotel… I love tennis! But then I knew that this court was the hotel heliport and was used for publicity as tennis court, but has never been used for that. I must admit it was a great disappointment to know that.
I really like the shape of the hotel, in the sea reminds me a surfboard buried. Also, when I was researching I realized that Dubai has many unique buildings or towers, which stand out from ordinary constructions. What I like about the Burj Al Arab is that it’s on the beach, more isolated from the rest of the buildings (even is built on an artificial island) and this does not interrupt the landscape of what is the city, although it’s clearly that being so big, overshadow the surroundings.

So Delicious!

Today I’m going to talk about a place I like to go to eat. As you all know, I'm from Punta Arenas and in my city there are many places or "picadas" where you can go to eat something tasty and cheap. The place is called "Kiosko Roca" and is so named because is located at Julio Roca street, Punta Arenas. It’s close to the main square and port, so also is visited by tourists who are concentrated in that area, although the great majority are frequent customers who live in the city.
This place is known for selling milk with banana and choripanes...Yeah, I know it's kind of weird, but it’s the specialty of the house and, believe it or not, is really delicious. Also in 2012 the Kiosko Roca won the first place in the national competition "La major picada de Chile”. It’s a place you must visit if you ever go through Puntra Arenas, is delicious and so cheap. They also sell coffee and some candies but people mostly will eat choripan and banana milk. The Kiosko Roca has become over the years a place of tradition, opened in 1932 and since then thousands of people will buy the specialty they offer.

Industrial Design

Hello everyone!

When I was young I considered many careers. First I wanted to be a doctor, but I realized that I was terrified of syringes, needles and blood. Then I wanted to be an architect because my dad is one, but I spent so much time in his office so I bored about architecture. Among the careers I wanted to study are:  veterinary, law, mathematics teacher, mathematical science and I don’t remember which more.
Before going in university, architecture returned to get my attention and I was hesitating between studying design or architecture. My mother wanted me to study the same as my dad, but he supported me and watching my skills realized that design was best for me. Now I'm studying industrial design and I realize that relates a bit with the first career I had chosen, because I can help people, not in the health area but solving problematic that happens every day.

London Eye

Hello everyone!

Today I would like to tell you about a place of London. The London Eye is a giant Ferris wheel; it is situated on the South Bank of the river Thames, opposite the houses of parliament. By tube, Waterloo is the closest station and a guided tour ticket cost £21.51 online.
In the London Eye you can learn about the famous sights of London; I think it's necessary to go to this place if you ever go to London.
I would love to go there because it’s a global view of London. It shows the city essence and a beautiful landscape. I would like to go on day and night; I think the views of the city will be very different with and without light.

Blue Man Group

Hey everyone!
Today we have to talk about a concert or exhibition. I’ve never been in a concert; no one goes to Punta Arenas!! I think that going to see Blue Man Group was close as a concert. The show was in the Stage Bluemax Theater in Berlin, when I was in my school trip, in February 2010. When my classmates and I saw a tourist guide of the city, we realized that Blue Man Group was like an attraction, so we decided to go. We were about one hour in line to buy the tickets! We were frozen because part of the line was out the building.
I loved the show; it was very very funny because Blue Man Group makes humorous routine. I liked the music as well as the lights and colors (they use paint, foam, color laser and percussion.)
At the end, when I was living the place, the players went to take some photos. I was lucky, one of them take a photo with me. When we were watching the show, we were not allowed to take photos, but searching in internet, especially YouTube, I realized that there are some videos that are part of the same routine that I saw. It’s a little long but here is the video! Enjoy it.

Playa Grande

Hello everyone
Today I’m going to talk about a beach from Chile. My favorite beach is located in Pucón and it called Playa Grande. When I was young I went every summer with my family and we stayed in Gran Hotel Pucon, placed in front of the beach. I think the last time I went was in 2009 but by this time my brother was in Viña del Mar with his friends.
In Playa Grande there are many things to do. In this beach we can find the dock and also you can rent sailboard, wind surf, jet skis and kayaks. When I was 9 years old I rent a kayak with my father, he was teaching me how to row when a guy passed very fast on his jet ski very close to us. I was really scared and started to cry because the kayak shook with the waves caused by the Jet Ski.
One of the things I like about this beach is that it has fresh water because it is a lake (Lago Villarrica). Another thing I like is the sand, it has coarse sand and gray color, as it has volcanic origin. Finally, I love the landscape, not arid as the other beaches. Everything is surrounded by trees and colors, plus I can see that there is land on the other side of the beach.

The Beatles

Hello everyone!

Today I like to share a photo with you. This photo was taken in the Madame Tussauds Berlin museum in February 2010, when I was 16 years old. Madame Tussauds is a wax museum; it display historical and royal figures, film stars, sport stars, etc. When in my school trip we visited Berlin, my classmates discovered this museum when they went for a walk and begged the teachers go. I think that visit was very funny, I run down the battery of my camera at halfway so the rest of the photos were taken by my best friend. This is one of them, my best friend took that photo and it shows The Beatles and me :D (I have another photo with The Beatles but is out of focus) I have to say that they don’t look like the originals; I mean is very evident that they are waxworks. Nevertheless, other famous artist are identical than the original, for example Robbie Williams, Albert Einstein, Michael Jackson and the most identical, Nicole Kidman! I like this photo because it brings me good memories. I had a great time at the walk to the museum; I like all the photographs from there, but especially this because I like the colors, the instruments and the carefree attitude that they have.

Hey everyone!

Today we have to write a free post, so I'm going to talk about my home town.
I was born in one of the further south city, Punta Arenas. It’s a very beautiful place to live, but most people think that it’s awful because the weather is a little frozen. In my opinion the weather is not a problem, maybe because I’m used to live with a snowy winter. Besides the fact that we have heating.

In other aspect, Punta Arenas is one of the tourist destinations most visit in the country. In the region, you can find many places of touristic interest, for example “Torres del Paine”, that place is the most famous and visit. Many people go there and they went camping or trekking. Also you can find diverse flora and fauna, pumas are characteristic of the area. Another place I found very interesting and beautiful it’s called “Pingüineras” and as his names say, a lot of penguins lives there, except in winter, when they goes to the Antarctic.

The city has many places to go all over; in “Zona Franca” you can find a lot of cheap objects! And in “Costanera” you can go to see the sunrise in the sea, or just for a walk.

Ambitions

Today I like to talk about an ambition I have. I really would like to travel different countries. I think it’s very interesting the diversity of people that you can find throughout the world; different histories, cultures and buildings makes each city unique. This dream began when I went in a German school and then in 2010, with my classmates, we went on school trip to Germany… it was the most amazing trip of my life! Knowing other customs makes me think that there are many others in different places. Also, many exchange students came when I was in school and they told us what their lives were in town with their families. In those moments, I realize that they had other realities. If I could fulfill my ambition to travel many countries, still don’t know how many exactly, I would a more educated person, supplementing my career besides having several points of view. Until now the next destination that I would like is England, in order to learn to speak English fluently… well, and write too.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

I'd like to begin my blog with a book I recommend. The Swedish author named Stieg Larsson write a book in 2005 titled The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (personally, I don't like the English name, I prefer the literally translation Men who hate women). I read and discovered it in 2010 because my aunt recommends it to my grandmother in a dinner. It tells the story of a crime who involves an entire family and a journalist and a freelance surveillance agent who investigate the case. I really like it because it’s full of mystery and the characters are unique. This book is the first part of a trilogy called Millennium series, the other two books are The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest (books I recommend too). I also see and like the film adaptation in 2011, but I’m still thinking that reading the book is a million times better.
